School Based Mentoring

What is the School-Based Program?

Children in this program are referred by school counselors. The counselors identify children who can benefit from additional support and weekly mentorship meetings during the school day. Mentors in our school programs meet with their “Littles” once per week at a local elementary school at an allocated time during the elementary school day.  School Based Bigs and Littles work on social goals together, and they do this by playing board games, working on school work, crafts, sharing snacks together, playing sports, or simply talking.  Within this framework, we have options for both High School aged volunteers, as well as adult Bigs, or mentors.  We currently have school programs in Palisades and Pennsbury School Districts.

Kids in grades K-8 can be referred and matched in our program. Bigs may come from one of our Corporate Partners or may be retirees or volunteers who have flexible schedules.

BBBSBC provides school in our program with a bin filled with age-appropriate STEM focused games and activities. Our goal is to build their interest and skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics while they also build friendships.

its teacher-approved! Some of the biggest supporters of our STEM School Based Mentoring Program are Teachers. They see their students come back from time with their Big filled with confidence, big smiles, ready to learn and eager to succeed.

Here are some statements from those who have first-hand experience being a part of these programs.

“SHE SHOWS ENTHUSIASM WHEN WE MEET,  AND IS MUCH LESS SHY SINCE WE FIRST BEGAN TO MEET AT THE BEGINNING OF LAST SCHOOL YEAR. I NO LONGER HAVE TO DRIVE THE CONVERSATION, AS IT HAPPENS NATURALLY, AND WE ALWAYS ENJOY HOWEVER WE DECIDE TO SPEND OUR TIME TOGETHER.” – HIGH SCHOOL BIG JACQUELYN
“SHE’S MY FRIEND, SHE TALKS TO ME ABOUT MY FUTURE.” – LITTLE SISTER CIERRA

This pair was together for 10 years, the Big was introduced to the Little when he was in elementary school. The Big continued School-Based weekly meetings with the Little through to graduation from High School. There are also teen Bigs, high school students, who mentor the elementary school students in their district.

We want to say thank you to all our EITC Donors for making our High School Bigs Program possible!
