Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bucks County’s BLAST (Bigs & Littles Autism Support Team) Program is an innovative High School Bigs program which provides two specially-trained, “High School Big” mentors for each elementary student who is diagnosed with having Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Students from both Council Rock North and South High Schools meet with students who have been referred from Goodnoe Elementary.
The goals of the program include:
- Improving Littles’ social communication and interaction skills
- Improving Littles’ flexibility regarding their interests and transitions
- Improving Littles’ self-esteem
Since ASD is often characterized by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and repetitive behaviors, this program focuses on improvements in these areas. This program provides a positive, enriching experience for both the High School Bigs and their mentees.
